Bad bills advancing in the House and Senate

This bill undermines their authority by forcing them to follow rigid state rules, even when those rules may not serve their students well. It also gives the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) the power to override local decisions, taking control away from those who best understand their schools and students.Opens the door to political manipulation:&nbsp;SB 5179 allows anyone in a school district to file complaints, even if they have no direct connection to the schools. This opens the door for activists and outside groups to flood the system with complaints based on political agendas rather than genuine concerns.&nbsp;Increases bureaucracy:&nbsp;Schools already have established procedures for handling complaints, complying with laws, and being accountable to voters. This bill adds even more paperwork, regulations, and administrative hurdles, taking time and resources away from students. Instead of helping schools address real issues, it burdens them with more bureaucracy and legal challenges.Risks cutting school funding:&nbsp;The bill gives OSPI the power to withhold up to 20% of a school district&rsquo;s state funding if it determines the district is not compliant. These funds are meant to support students, not to be used as punishment. Additionally,&nbsp;OSPI&#39;s enforcement of state policies could lead to conflicts with federal regulations, as seen with Tumwater School District, which is currently under investigation by the federal Office for Civil Rights for potentially violating Title IX due to OSPI&rsquo;s mandates.Forces school leaders to conform:&nbsp;Under this bill, a superintendent who does not comply with every state rule could be labeled unprofessional and face disciplinary action or job loss. This forces school leaders to prioritize state mandates over what is best for their students and communities, creating a system where strict, one-size-fits-all rules replace local decision-making.

State overreach in local schools 

<a href="https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary/?BillNumber=5041&Year=2025&Initiative=false">Senate Bill 5041</a> would extend unemployment benefits to striking workers, fundamentally altering the purpose of unemployment insurance, which is meant to provide temporary income to individuals who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. Striking is a voluntary action, and requiring businesses to cover the costs of that choice is unfair.Forces businesses to fund worker strikes: Employers bear the full cost of unemployment benefits, with some expenses shared among all businesses and others tied to an employer&rsquo;s individual experience rate&mdash;the number of former employees who collect benefits. Unemployment insurance is traditionally intended for workers who lose their jobs due to layoffs or circumstances beyond their control. This bill would undermine that principle by allowing workers who choose to strike to receive benefits, placing additional financial strain on businesses already struggling with Washington&rsquo;s rising costs.A dangerous precedent for labor disputes: SB 5041 would insert the state into private labor negotiations, tilting the balance in favor of unions and incentivizing longer, more frequent strikes. By offering unemployment benefits to striking workers, the bill would encourage labor disruptions while unfairly penalizing employers for disputes outside their control. Unemployment benefits for striking workers

Nearly 450,000 Washingtonians supported Initiative 2081, which the Legislature passed with bipartisan backing to protect parental involvement in education. Now, HB 1296 seeks to undo those protections, stripping parents of their rights, limiting transparency, and locking families out of key decisions about their children&rsquo;s education and well-being.This bill shuts parents out of critical information&mdash;curriculum access, school records, and medical or counseling details&mdash;handing more power to the state while sidelining families. Even worse, it includes an emergency clause to block voters from challenging it at the ballot box.HB 1296 weakens parental involvement and forces schools to adopt vague, divisive policies under threat of financial penalties. Instead of supporting student success, it prioritizes ideology over education, undermines local control, and pushes parents further away from their children&rsquo;s learning.

Undoing the Parents’ Bill of Rights

<a href="https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary/?BillNumber=1531&Year=2025&Initiative=false">House Bill 1531</a> seeks to strip local governments and elected officials of their ability to make independent decisions regarding public health responses. Dubbed the &quot;Public Health Mandate Bill,&quot; this legislation prioritizes state control over local governance, imposing a one-size-fits-all approach that ignores the unique needs of different communities.Eliminates local decision-making: HB 1531 seeks to void any existing or future state and local laws that could limit public health mandates, removing the ability of local governments to tailor responses based on their communities.Broad, unchecked authority: The bill would require state and local officials to implement &ldquo;evidence-based&rdquo; disease control measures&mdash;without defining clear limits&mdash;leaving the door open for sweeping mandates on vaccinations, masking, and other health policies.Permanent expansion of government power: With an emergency clause, this law would take effect immediately upon passage, permanently changing how health policies are decided in Washington.By stripping communities of their ability to make decisions that best fit their needs, this bill shifts power away from local elected officials and the people they serve, granting broad and unchecked authority to the state. Washingtonians deserve a balanced approach&mdash;one that respects public health while preserving local control and individual choice.
